Not all heroes wear capes—sometimes, the most profound acts of heroism stem from quiet dedication! This year, United Way Hungary was honored with the Heroes of the Year Award at the Glamour Gala, recognizing their outstanding United Way for Reading Comprehension Program. Their mission? To transform reading from a struggle into a joyful adventure, employing innovative teaching methods and contemporary literature.
The Importance of Reading in the Digital Age
In our screen-dominated world, reading remains an essential skill. It goes beyond mere comprehension; it nurtures creativity, emotional intelligence, and self-expression. Research shows that children who read regularly not only gain confidence but also excel academically and are better prepared to face life’s challenges.
Alarming Statistics
Recent PISA test results reveal a concerning reality: one in four Hungarian students struggles with reading comprehension, finding it difficult to understand what they read. In response, United Way Hungary champions initiatives that incorporate engaging, play-based learning methods to help children enhance their reading skills!
Empowering Through Literature
Each year, United Way Hungary organizes inspiring book drives to provide schools with contemporary literature for youth and children. In 2024, they collected an impressive 5,000 books, benefiting students in 51 schools, where these books are cherished in book clubs, school activities, and at home. This year, they have set their sights even higher: a goal of 10,000 books for 100 disadvantaged schools!
