AmCham Global Outlook Series - Global Economic Realignment: Challenges and Opportunities for Hungary with Dr. Zoltán Pogátsa

At the latest installment of AmCham Hungary’s Global Outlook series on Monday, February 23, economist Dr. Zoltán Pogátsa shared his insights on how global economic realignment is reshaping the international economic landscape and what it means for Hungary’s competitiveness.

During his presentation, Dr. Pogátsa highlighted that over the past decade, China has overtaken the European Union to become the world’s second-largest economy after the United States. He also emphasized that while GDP per capita alone does not fully reflect economic competitiveness, factors such as higher value-added industries, technological development, and the presence of inclusive rather than extractive economic institutions offer a more accurate picture of long-term economic strength.

According to Dr. Pogátsa, these trends also point to possible development paths for Central and Eastern European countries, including Hungary, where education, technological advancement, and a stronger focus on higher value-added industries could play a key role in supporting sustainable economic growth.

The presentation was followed by a lively Q&A session with participants.
