CANDIDATE BIO
Ákos Burján is a seasoned tax advisor who is in the profession for more than 25 years. Currently a Partner at PwC, Ákos has been with the firm since 2003, overseeing consulting teams, managing client relationships, and driving new product development. As the leader of Direct Tax Advisory Services, M&A Tax Services, and firmwide Deals coordination, Ákos plays a pivotal role in shaping PwC’s tax and transaction strategy. He also sits in the Hungarian Leadership Team of PwC.
His international experience includes assignments in Amsterdam and Ljubljana, where he led PwC’s tax department for three years. Ákos holds a postgraduate degree in economics law and an LL.M. in International Tax Law from Vienna, reflecting his strong academic foundation.
Beyond his professional duties, Ákos has lectured at Budapest Business University (BGE) for two decades and actively contributes to the business community. He has served on boards of trustees, participated in business associations, and is a member of the BGE advisory council. As an AIESEC alumnus, Ákos values global perspectives and collaboration.
Ákos’s involvement with AmCham began during his time in Slovenia in 2011. Since 2014, he has been active in the Hungarian chapter, serving as Board Member at Large (2017–2020), contributing to various working groups—especially the tax committee—and currently holds the position of Secretary Treasurer of AmCham Hungary.

Why do you think membership in the American Chamber of Commerce is important for businesses operating in Hungary?
Membership in AmCham is a strategic asset for businesses in Hungary. The Chamber provides unparalleled opportunities for networking, advocacy, and knowledge sharing. Its engagement with government and policymakers ensures members’ voices are heard, contributing to a more competitive and transparent business environment. Participation in committees and working groups enables members to collaborate on solutions to pressing challenges—such as innovation, sustainability, HR, and regulatory efficiency. AmCham’s new Policy Agenda (2026–2030) sets a clear vision for the future, focusing on building a competitive and inclusive workforce, ensuring a predictable and attractive business environment, and driving smart, sustainable growth through innovation and digitalization. These priorities directly support Hungarian businesses and create a foundation for long-term success. Recent developments in Hungarian-American relations have further elevated AmCham’s role. Strengthening these ties is vital for Hungary’s future, opening doors for investment, innovation, and global partnerships. AmCham members are uniquely positioned to benefit from these opportunities, and our collective efforts will help shape Hungary’s development in the years ahead.
What motivates you to be an AmCham Board Member?
My motivation stems from a commitment to making Hungary an attractive destination for business and talent. As a professional advisor, I strive to deliver impactful solutions to clients, but serving on the Board enables me to drive change at a broader, strategic level. I am passionate about combining my expertise with AmCham’s advocacy to foster a competitive, innovative, and sustainable economic environment. Board members have a responsibility to support the development of Hungary’s education system, essential for the success of future generations. I am inspired by AmCham’s renewed focus on supporting a competitive workforce and promoting smart growth. By championing digitalization, innovation, and sustainability, we can help Hungarian businesses adapt to global trends and remain resilient in a rapidly changing world.
Why do you feel you are qualified? What skills do you bring to the position?
I bring diverse skills and experiences to the Board. My work with clients in Hungary and internationally has given me insight into industry best practices and emerging trends. As a tax advisor, I have a strong understanding of regulatory frameworks and a robust professional network. My involvement as a lecturer and supporter of Budapest Business University provides a strategic perspective on employment and talent development. As an economist, tax advisor, and accountant, I am well-equipped for financial leadership roles. My experience aligns closely with AmCham’s Policy Agenda, especially in areas such as regulatory predictability, talent development, and sustainable business practices. I am committed to advancing these priorities for the benefit of our members and the wider business community. Since December 2023, I have been honored to serve as Treasurer of AmCham, deepening my commitment to the organization’s mission.
How have you been active in AmCham over the course of the last two years?
Throughout my involvement, I have actively supported AmCham’s strategic priorities, including the development and implementation of the new Policy Agenda. I am dedicated to ensuring our advocacy and programs reflect the evolving needs of our members and contribute to Hungary’s competitiveness and growth.
