Once again, AmCham and TGI Fridays WestEnd team up to bring you the best SuperBowl watch party in town!
Sunday was an absolute madness. Two overtime showdowns. Huge missed calls. Performances for the ages.
After a roller coaster of a season, the New England Patriots are headed to their third straight SuperBowl after finishing off the Kansas City Chiefs in overtime in a thriller of a game which saw four lead changes in a 38-point fourth quarter.
Head Coach Bill Belichick delivered a message early on with a well balanced running and passing game and effective defense which kept one of the most dangerous offenses in the league scoreless in a lopsided first half. However, Kansas City Head Coach Andy Reid managed to fire up his players at the break to mount a comeback. Patrick Mahomes came out firing, scoring three touchdowns to put the Chiefs back in the game for a remarkable fourth quarter.
With a 3-point Patriot lead, Mahomes got the ball in his hands with 32 seconds left and drove his team to field goal range and Harrison Butker sent the game into overtime. However, the Patriots won the coin toss and Tom Brady brilliantly engineered the 57th game-winning performance of his career to lead his team back from a fourth-quarter deficit or tie.
Brady now has a chance to lead the Pats to their sixth winning Super Bowl campaign to tie the record holder Pittsburg Steelers and to write their legacy as the greatest dynasty of all time.
The Los Angeles Rams also needed extra time to beat the top seed New Orleans Saints. Drew Brees and the Saints offense started strong and the Rams seemed out of sync in the deafening noise of the Superdome during the first half.
The Rams; however, stood their ground. With a couple of great plays and a strong defensive performance behind Ndamukong Suh and Aaron Donald, they caught up to the home team and went toe-to-toe with Payton's outfit in a highly controversial fourth quarter.
Even though the Rams offense seemed to have run out of gas by the end of the game, it did not matter as kicker Greg Zuerlein emerged to become the hero in clutch moments. With 15 seconds left, he completed a 48 yard field goal to send the game into overtime where he booted the ball from 57 yards for the longest game winning kick in NFL playoff history to grant the Rams their first Super Bowl appearance since 2002 when they lost to the New England Patriots in New Orleans.
In 2016, the Rams left St. Louis to move to Los Angeles starting a new chapter in the history of the franchise. Three years later, a team built by great young coach and a new philosophy earned a spot in the Super Bowl for a chance to win their first title since 1999.
Super Bowl LIII will see the rematch of Super Bowl XXXVI with Vegas bookmakers naming the Patriots as slight favourites. It's the clash of the new and the old, a bright spark of a potential new era versus a dynasty. We can't wait.
