ABB leads e-mobility field with next genera-tion high-voltage vehicle charger
- November 20, 2018
Building on its market leading portfolio of e-mobility solutions, ABB launched its latest innovations in DC fast charging, the Terra 54 and Terra 54HV at eMove360°.
Having recently gained recognition as number eight on Fortune Magazine’s list of companies that are ‘changing the world’ for the advances it has made in e-mobility and electric vehicle charging, ABB’s new Terra 54 and Terra 54HV are highly versatile 50 kW charging systems that have been specifically designed to meet the needs of the rapidly evolving electric vehicle market. They are ideally suited for service stations and car parks where quick charging is a must.
Following the success of ABB’s best-selling Terra series, with a global installed base of 8,000 DC fast chargers across 68 countries, the Terra 54HV platform offers an extended voltage range of between 150 and 920 V to charge next generation EVs with high-voltage battery systems, while simultaneously supporting all existing 500 V battery EVs.
It boasts a number of new and improved features such as brighter user displays (for clearer readability in direct sunlight) with more flexible customization options, and optional CCV or Nayax payment terminals for use across different countries. Terra 54 also sees the introduction of upgraded payment functionality, which means users only pay for the kW’s used.
Frank Mühlon, Head of ABB’s Global Business for Electric Vehicle Charging, said: “ABB Terra has become our best-selling charger family thanks to its functionality and reliability. However, electric vehicle technology is progressing at a rapid pace and so too must our products to ensure we remain at the forefront of the market.”
“We have listened carefully to customer feedback while specifically addressing the requirements of the latest high-voltage vehicles to create the new Terra 54 charger, which is packed with additional features and functionality.”
Other new features on Terra 54 chargers include: better handling and more stable connector holders for all cable types; upgraded power electronics for improved reliability and long-term component availability; improved accessibility for service engineers. The chargers are also prepared for smart charging profiles and site load management.
The Terra series of high-voltage chargers also offer the additional benefit of ABB Ability™ connected services, the company’s advanced digital management solution. An Ethernet-based interface seamlessly integrates with local applications for power management and charger status monitoring. Chargers can be connected to back offices, payment platforms or smart grids systems while remote diagnostics, repair and over-the-air software updates minimize downtime and keeps running costs low.
Frank Mühlon added: “The Terra 54 series further underlines our commitment to supporting the expansion of electric vehicle charging systems across the globe, creating more streamlined operating systems and bringing us closer to a future where zero emission travel can become a reality for all.”
The Terra 54 model offers a voltage range of 150 – 500 V, while the Terra 54 HV offers an extended voltage range of 150-920V.
