ABB Formula E Gen2 racecar to show cutting edge e-mobility technology for first time in Hungary, in live Budapest street display

ABB, title partner of Formula E – the world’s first fully electric street racing series – will bring the all-electric Gen2 racecar to this week’s ‘Great Run’ in Budapest. It will be the first time in Hungary that ABB Formula E has showcased the potential of e-mobility to provide sustainable transport solutions.
The Belgian driver Jérôme D'Ambrosio, who lies fifth in this season’s drivers’ championship, will demonstrate the car’s capabilities directly from competing in the ABB Formula E Paris E-Prix.
His car and a range of ABB fast chargers will be exhibited to the public to help inspire a dialogue with a wide audience on the topics of the future of mobility and the future of cities. The race series, with ABB as title partner, brings the latest innovations in electric vehicle and alternative energy solutions to city centers around the world. D’Ambrosio, meanwhile, having driven in every Formula E race since the series started in 2014, is one of its most experienced drivers.
The Great Run features racecars, motorbikes and trucks in the heart of Budapest, and allows fans to get closer access to the machines than they could have at a closed race circuit. The event will also provide a perfect platform for the latest electric vehicles (EVs) and charging systems to be displayed on ABB’s stand.
Developing the EV market
ABB has been investing in e-mobility since the turn of the millennium and is a technology leader in this field. Its portfolio includes numerous groundbreaking products, such as ABB’s fast-charging stations. The chargers, supported by ABB Ability™ digital networking capabilities, are helping speed the rollout of electric cars.
ABB is the global leader in DC fast charging, with more than 10,500 ABB fast-charging stations sold in 73 countries – more than any other manufacturer, offering the full range of charging solutions for electric cars, electric and hybrid buses as well as electrification solutions for ships and railways.
ABB entered into a seven-year partnership with Formula E in January 2018 to build on ABB’s position as the global leader in defining the future of mobility. The ABB FIA Formula E Championship serves as a competitive platform to develop and test electrification and digitalization technologies under the tough conditions of motor racing, helping refine the design and functionality of electric vehicles and infrastructure as well as the associated digital platforms.
In support of the title partnership, ABB this year became official charging partner of the Jaguar I-PACE eTROPHY, which races with the ABB Formula E championship. ABB Terra 54 DC chargers power the I-PACE SUV racecars throughout race events.
As global demand for EVs increases, so too does the need for supporting charger infrastructure; industry-leading products such as the Terra DC series position ABB ideally to meet the need.
ABB’s Terra 54 DC fast-chargers enable the Jaguar I-PACE race cars to charge to a 200 km range in just eight minutes – similar to the amount of time it takes to refuel a conventional vehicle. Unlike the custom-built Formula E race car, the Jaguar I-PACE used for the eTROPHY is based on the road-going vehicle available to the general public. The eTROPHY brings consumer technology to the race track, enabling the development and testing of cutting-edge charging technology.
ABB has chosen Vác in Hungary as the site for one of its e-charger manufacturing sites. Since 2011 the Vác plant has supplied products to the global market, with a wide variety of e-chargers.
Hungary’s EV market is growing: the number of green license plates exceeded 10,000 in the country in 2018, although the ratio of electric vehicles is still relatively low by European standards. Approximately 70 DC chargers are already available in Budapest, with a further 54 beyond the Hungarian capital – mainly in cities. These figures indicate that there is still a significant growth opportunity for the country’s EV infrastructure market.
ABB’s first Hungarian fast charging station was put into operation in April 2012 in Budapest, at the environmentally friendly filling station of MOL. Since then, ABB has provided several fast chargers across the country, including in parking lots near LIDL stores and the DELPHI Connection Systems parking lot in Tatabánya in Bukkaranyos (northern Hungary), which is connected to a wind farm.
ABB is also part of the Ionity project for the installation of ultra-fast chargers. The Ionity project is a partnership between BMW, Ford, Daimler and the Volkswagen Group to develop a fast-charging network for electric cars in Europe. Several 350KW ABB Terra HP chargers will be delivered along Hungary’s M1 motorway in Bábolna soon. These are capable of charging one car at 350kW/h, or two simultaneously at 150 kW/h.
