In October the red-sludge severely damaged several buildings, so the AmCham Foundation raised 6.8 million HUF to build new playgrounds and a gym for the primary schools in Devecser and Kolontár. In our volunteer’s day together with member companies (Provident Pénzügyi Zrt., Persecutor Vagyonvédelmi Kft., Manpower, LEG Magyarország Zrt.), local teachers and AmCham staff, the approximately 60 participants painted fences, doors and did gardening.

„We arrived at the school in the morning, where local teachers invited us for a delicious breakfast. After that the work began, most of the volunteers started with the garden and the fences and a couple of us prepared lunch. When all the work was done and we ran out of paint, the goulash was also ready so it was time to start the well-deserved lunch! Meanwhile some participants prepared the tables, others played ping-pong and basket-ball with the local children.” – as a volunteer summed up the day.

„We had a great, productive day in Devecser, by the end of the day we were all pretty tired, but happy and satisfied that we could also give something to the local community!” – she added.

Önkéntesek segítettek

A 2001-ben alakult alapítvány hetedik éve rendez gyűjtéseket és önkéntes napokat a tagvállalatok dolgozói részére. Céljuk, hogy egy-egy rászoruló gyermekintézménynek segítsenek gyűjtéssel és kétkezi munkával. A tagvállalatok ezúttal hét millió forintot gyűjtöttek össze, hogy az iszapkatasztrófában károsodott devecseri és kolontári iskolának segítsenek. Az adományt már korábban átadták, azóta abból Kolontáron 1,2 millióból elkészült az iskola udvarán egy játszótér, Devecserben pedig a fennmaradó összegből a Petőfi téri iskola játszótere készült el, valamint a Damjanich utcai épület tornaterme újul meg hamarosan. Az önkéntes napon pedig a nagyrészt budapesti székhelyű tagvállalatok dolgozói érkeztek Devecserbe. Mielőtt elkezdték volna a munkát, Gordon Mária, a kuratórium tagja köszöntötte valamennyiüket, örömét kifejezve, hogy ilyen sokan feláldozták a szombatot a segítség érdekében. Hangsúlyozta, hogy sokat jelent a pénzadomány, de a személyes segítség helyben szintén nagyon fontos. Sikos Lászlóné az iskola alsó tagozatának igazgató helyettese az intézmény nevében is köszönte a segítséget, mint mondta, most minden támogatás jól jön, minden munkáskéznek örülnek. Az iskola dolgozói által készített reggeli elfogyasztását követően az önkéntesek nekiálltak, hogy a főépületnél lefessék a kerítést, a Petőfi téri épületnél pedig felássák az udvart, füvesítsenek, ajtókat, kaput, palánkot fessenek. A munkában férfiak, nők, gyerekek egyaránt részt vettek, lelkesen vették kézbe a fejszét, ecsetet, gereblyét. Azonban az intézmény dolgozói sem tétlenkedtek, maguk is beálltak festeni, részt vettek a parkosításban.

What is "A Day To Make It Happen" and how can your company help?

Spend this day helping to build a stronger community and to positively impact the lives of the underprivileged by volunteering your time for one day.

The AmCham Foundation asked for help in 2010 from members to support Devecser and Kolontár after the tragedy of the red sludge. The member companies and the foundation finally donated 7 million HUF to rebuild a gym and two playgrounds. This year volunteer work needs to focus on the school’s needs, such as painting doors and the fence or cleaning up the garden (grassing, planting). Gardening tools, plants and paint are also needed for the above.

There are two options to participate in "A Day To Make It Happen"

Option one: Volunteer at the Gárdonyi Géza Elementary School in Devecser together with employees of other AmCham member companies to create a pleasant environment for the children

  • Date: June 18, 2011 (Saturday) from 10 am to 3 pm
  • Where: Devecser, Várkert u. 1.
  • Who: Both individuals and teams from AmCham member companies


Option two: Volunteer with your company at a location that you may select from a list provided by the AmCham Foundation

How does this work?

  • Contact the AmCham Foundation for a detailed list of locations and institutions where you can volunteer.
  • Select one institution from the list where you would like to volunteer.
  • Organise your own volunteer group from within your company.
  • Make it happen in June 2011, as the possible institutions have kept this date free for "A Day To Make It Happen". (Please note that if you select this option you must include AmCham in the title. For example "AmCham-'Name of Your Company' Day to Make it Happen")
    Project teams should comprise 10-15 people on average, in order to maximize project effectiveness.

So make a difference and volunteer one day!
